Should Kiwis play Origin?

March 25th 2008 07:45
Category: Opinion
Bulldogs foward Sonny Bill Williams has created headlines by claiming that, depsite his New Zealand heritage, he wants to play State of Origin for NSW.

I think that Kiwis should NEVER be allowed to play for either QLD or NSW for a number of reasons:

The spirit and rivalry associated with State of Origin would be lost forever. Growing up in Queensland, it's every rugby league playing boy's dream to play for his state and it would be impossible for someone representing another country to match the passion and enthusiasm of a born and bread Queenslander.

The jersey would be cheapened and therefore the intensity of the match would decrease. We often see ordinary players (Adam Mogg in recent times) pull on their state jersey and grow 10ft tall and bullet proof. The essence of Origin is the fact that pride and passion can overcome talent. To put it simply, people from outside the states do not understand the legacy and feelings involved with the greatest contest in rugby league.

Perhaps the NZRL should look at an annual tri-series between the North Island and South Island to give their players more exposure to a high level of competition.

But players should allign themselves with either NZ or QLD/NSW not both!

Thoughts?

What about a three way series? NSW vs QLD vs NZ? It would be a radical departure but what a great tournament it would make. They must have considered this in the past, surely.

That's definitely an option but personally it would just be too weird.

I still think either NZ South Island v NZ North Island or NZ v the remaining Pacific Islands would be the way to go - either option would really assist international development.

Correct.

The traditional State of Origin contest won't be going anywhere.

I think NZ shouldn't be involved in the actual state of origin tournament, but what could happen is that NZ could play a one off game against QLD and a one off game against NSW after the State of Origin is finished. The thing about NZ Rugby League is that a North Island Vs South Island thing would be like QLD or NSW playing against Tasmania as there is hardly any good quality league in the south Island except for maybe a little in Canterbury. Bur if NZ played against the Pacific Islands which is again a very one sided match then the winner if each state of Origin in NZ and Aus could play against eachother?????

They already do. Brad Thorn, Toni Carroll & Karmichael Hunt to name a few that have played state of origin.
