The 2008 season is shaping as one to forget for the Easts Tigers after a heartbreaking 26-22 loss to the Mackay Cutters on Saturday afternoon at Langlands Park.
Easts had an elusive win in their sights – thanks to a 22-18 lead with six minutes remaining – but a late solo try to Cutters’ prop Quinton Fielder consigned the Tigers to their fifth consecutive defeat.
The Tigers had a chance to snatch victory with one final play after the fulltime siren ten metres out from the Cutters line. However, much to the frustration of the home crowd, the ball hit the deck and the Mackay defence held on.
Easts winger Kev Stephensen made sure his team started the match in the best possible fashion when he touched down in the corner for the opening try after a well timed draw and pass from teammate Liam Campbell.
In windy conditions, captain Matt Lockyer nailed the conversion from the sideline, giving the Tigers a 6-0 advantage in the 3rd minute.
But Mackay hit back with two tries in quick succession to centres Adam Wright (17th minute) and Dean Tass (21st minute) taking the scoreline to 8-6 in favour of the visitors midway through the first half.
Easts had an opportunity to regain the ascendency but diminutive hooker Isaac Kaufmann was denied a four-pointer, the referee ruling held up over the line.
The Cutters continued their assault on the Tigers line thanks to a pinpoint 40/20 kick and the subsequent set of six saw Fielder crash over under the posts, taking Mackay’s lead to 14-6.
Easts produced one of the tries of the game when the dangerous Stephensen again flew down the touchline before finding Lockyer in support on the inside, reducing the deficit to 14-12 at the break.
Mackay were gifted the first four-pointer of the second stanza when centre Dean Tass pounced on a knock on from Easts front rower Josh Griffith, sprinting 70m to touch down under the uprights.
The tit-for-tat nature of the game continued when Stephensen dived over in the corner for his double in the 69th minute. Lockyer nailed the conversion and the game was in the balance at 20-18 to the visitors.
Easts took a 22-18 lead six minutes out from fulltime thanks to a try from fullback Wade Liddell, who capitalised on an incisive dummy half scoot from Kaufmann.
Unfortunately, the Tigers were left shaking their heads when Fielder barged his way over in the 77th minute despite the attention of numerous defenders, giving Mackay their fifth win of the year.
The Tigers did show glimpses of brilliance in attack but were again left to rue basic errors at crucial stages throughout the match.
