Queensland Cup - Round 17 - Pride down Tigers

The Easts Tigers have slumped to their second consecutive loss, going down 26-10 to competition heavyweights Northern Pride at Langlands Park on Saturday afternoon.
Similar to last round, the effort of the Tigers’ players couldn’t be questioned but the home team failed to match the consistency of their more fancied rivals, who were able to score at regular intervals throughout the contest.
The game was locked up at 10-all during the early stages of the second half thanks to a determined solo try from second rower Marcus Jensen in his 100th appearance for the club. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough to inspire the Tigers to victory, as they scored no further points while the Pride crossed the line three times in the final half hour.
Easts started the match in the worst possible fashion, conceding a try within the first set of six to Pride centre Jamie Frizzo, who snuck over out wide after his team travelled the length of the field from the kick-off.
To their credit, the Tigers hit back with a four-pointer in the 14th minute when a long pass from five-eighth Matt Lockyer allowed the elusive Liam Campbell to slice through the opposition close to the line, levelling the game at 4-all.
The remainder of the first half was very much an arm wrestle, as both sides held each other at bay with tenacious defence.
However, the boys from Cairns broke the deadlock moments before the break thanks to powerhouse winger Josh Vaughan, who crashed over in the corner despite the presence of two Tigers’ players.
Easts were right back in the contest when Marcus Jensen twisted and turned to cross for the first four-pointer of the second stanza but the Pride regained their lead when Frizzo ran through a gaping hole in the defence to grab his double.
The visitors skipped further away from the locals, with the NRL-experienced Matthew Bartlett crossing under the posts in the 65th minute, taking the score out to 22-10.
The Northern Pride put the icing on the cake when speedster Drew Campbell reeled in an intercept and ran 40m to dive over for his team’s fifth try of the afternoon.
The defeat leaves the Tigers at seventh place on the Queensland Cup table, making a victory in next weekend’s clash with the Wynnum Manly Seagulls crucial if the club is to have any chance of featuring in the finals.
