The Easts Tigers have registered their second victory for the season with a 34-6 demolition of a woeful Tweed Heads Seagulls at Langlands Park on Saturday afternoon.
Easts continued their brilliant attacking form from last weekend, touching down for 6 tries against an error-riddled Tweed Heads side that produced a performance fitting for the team last on the table.
Both sides started the contest in uninspiring fashion but a crucial three tries, within a 15 minute period in the second half, allowed the Tigers to run away with match.
It took a 21st minute penalty goal from the boot of Easts’ five-eighth Isaac Kaufmann to break the nil-all deadlock and give the home team a 2-0 advantage.
Only moments later, the Tigers found themselves on the attack following Tweed’s failure to find touch from a penalty. Nifty winger Kev Stephensen made them pay the ultimate price when, in the following set of six, he dived over for a try in the corner.
The Tigers scored the only other four-pointer of the half in the 34th minute, when fullback Wade Liddell pounced on a loose ball in the in-goal following a deft grubber kick from playmaker Jason Conners. Matt Lockyer added the extras to give Easts a 12-0 lead at the change of ends.
Tweed Heads reduced the deficit early in the second stanza thanks to the efforts of prop Ian Donnelly, who found a gaping hole in the Tigers’ goal line defence to stroll over for a try.
But it was the Tigers who were able to surge ahead, with backrower Anthony Boyd scoring after hitting a hole close to line following a nicely timed pass from Connors.
Elusive centre Liam Campbell was the next to touch down for the home side when he finished a sweeping backline movement, taking the score line out to 22-6 in the 53rd minute.
Only minutes later the Tigers posted further points, with Marcus Jensen gliding through a massive gap in the Seagulls’ defence on the fringe of the ruck. Much to the delight of the supporters Lockyer nailed a difficult conversion to give Easts an unassailable 28-6 lead.
Fullback Wade Liddell was able to put the icing on the cake when he crossed for a late try to complete a comprehensive win for the boys from Langlands Park.
