The Easts Tigers have failed to secure the two completion points in Round 8, going down 36-14 to a fast finishing Ipswich Jets at Langlands Park on Saturday afternoon.
The injury riddled Tigers produced a courageous first half performance to lead 14-6 at the break but were gunned down by an Ipswich team that scored six tries to nil in the second stanza.
Easts were missing a host of key players including Cameron Durnford, Anthony Boyd, Matt Gruzska, Abraham Sila and Tom McGougan and simply couldn’t match the intensity of the second-placed Jets during the latter stages of the match.
The defeat hurt even more for Easts, as ex-Tigers Donald Malone, Leigh Coghill and Trevor Exton all crossed for tries against their former club.
A late injury to hooker Trent Young cast even more gloom over the Tiger camp, with the inspirational captain suffering a likely season ending knee injury.
However, despite the final result, the Tigers controlled the opening exchanges and were able to post the first try in the 14th minute through lock Scott Sipple, who dived over following a bullocking run from young prop Fred Tila.
Easts crossed again when, from the base of the scrum, Isaac Kaufmann threw a brilliant dummy to break the Jets’ defence and run 40m to score untouched under the posts.
Kaufmann converted his own try to give the home team a 12-0 advantage midway through the first half.
The Jets scored their first try in the 27th minute, with Leigh Coghill successfully grounding a grubber kick in the in-goal but it was the Tigers who took a 14-6 lead into the break thanks to a Matt Lockyer penalty goal on the stroke of halftime.
Unfortunately for the Tigers the second half was one to forget, with Ipswich controlling possession and touching down for six unanswered tries.
The Jets scored two four-pointers within the opening ten minutes of the stanza to level the game at 14-all.
Easts had a chance to regain the lead but centre Liam Campbell was denied a crucial try when the sideline official ruled he went into touch before placing the ball over the line.
However, the Jets continued their momentum and increased their lead to 24-14 with two more tries in the 58th and 63rd minute.
The result was put beyond doubt when centre Donald Malone reeled in an Easts’ kick and sprinted the length of the field for a try, giving the Jets an unassailable 30-14 advantage with only seven minutes remaining.
The loss will more than likely see Easts drop out of the top five, making next week’s away game against the Mackay Cutters a “must win” match.
