Category: Easts Tigers Reports
For all of you Queensland Cup fans out there, I've recently started covering home matches for the Easts Tigers. The Tigers are celebrating their 75th anniversary this season and I would encourage any rugby league fan in South-East Brisbane to pop down to Langlands Park at Stones Corner and check out a match.
Easts are coached by former great Darren Smith and boast a number of players with NRL experience including captain Trent Young, Charlie Tonga, Liam Campbell and Dane Campbell.
Round 4 - Match Report
The Easts Tigers have registered their first win for season 2008 with a 40-4 thrashing of the Central Comets at Langlands Park on Saturday afternoon.
It was the Tigers who controlled the game from start to finish, scoring a remarkable eight tries – young outside back Matt Gruszka nabbed a hat trick –– against a lacklustre Comets outfit that looked sluggish in defence.
The Easts’ backline tore the opposition to pieces with dazzling speed and footwork but the forward pack must also take credit for their hard work up the middle of the ruck.
The home team scored within the opening 10 minutes thanks to flying winger Kev Stephensen, who finished an impressive fifth tackle movement containing kicks from captain Trent Young and fullback Wade Liddell.
Rookie centre Matt Gruszka took the score line out to 8-0 in favour of Easts when he crossed for the first of his three tries in the 11th minute following a great one arm offload from lock Scott Sipple. In windy conditions, Liddell failed to add the extras from out wide.
Once again Sipple provided the pass – on this occasion a cut out ball – for Gruszka to touch down for his second four-pointer of the afternoon, giving Easts a 12-0 advantage at the break.
