August 4th 2008 22:26
Category: Opinion

Here are the results for Part Two of the inaugural NRL Readers' Poll!

The Manly Sea Eagles were the team voted most likely to take home the 2008 Premiership, while 89% of respondents thought Australia would win the World Cup.

Most people were of the view that too many games are being hosted at ANZ stadium.

Most supported team: Brisbane Broncos (8 votes)
Bulldogs (5), Tigers (5), Knights (3), Warriors (3), Roosters (3), Sea Eagles (3), Others (8)

2008 Premiership winning team: Manly Sea Eagles (17 votes)
Storm (11), Broncos (5), Others (5)

Most supported state in State of Origin: New South Wales (22 votes)
Queensland (12), Neither state (4)

Most supported country in World Cup: Australia (28 votes)
New Zealand (8), England, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga

2008 World Cup winning team: Australia (34 votes)
New Zealand (3), France

Do you plan to attend a World Cup fixture?
No (14 votes), Yes (13), Undecided (11)

When attending NRL matches, do you watch the U20s fixture prior to the main game?
Occasionally (20 votes), Always (10), Never (8)

Is the loss of players to the English Super League and rugby union affecting the standard of the NRL?
Yes (54%), No (46%)

If so, what can the NRL do to ensure players remain in Australia?
Allow salary cap concessions for long serving players (18)
Relax stipulations surrounding third party sponsorship agreements (17)
Increase the salary cap (12)
Increase representative match payments (12)
The NRL is doing enough already (4)

Others suggestions included:
I would love to see the smaller nations get a crack at the bigger developed nations, an exhibition game/tests or series. Even if the NRL players who were not selected for Australia, NZ or the Poms but were eligible to play for PNG, Samoa, The Aborigines etc could play for them without affecting them. Or taking a page out of the Rah Rahs book and have a combined pacific nations team or a 'Rest of the World' team included in a Gillette type series.

Are you satisfied with the performance of video referees?
Yes – they do a good job considering the pressure (32%)
No – they make too many wrong decisions (68%)

Should scrums remain a part of rugby league?
Yes – they're part of the fabric of the game and free up space for the backline (59%)
No – they are pointless and cause too many stoppages (41%)

Are too many matches played at Sydney's ANZ Stadium?
Yes – the game should return to the suburbs of Sydney (78%)
No – it's the biggest stadium, why not use it? (22%)
