Sydney Roosters ($1.40) v Canberra Raiders ($2.80)
The Roosters will be fresh following the bye, while the Raiders will have to improve after a woeful showing in the wet against the Warriors. Sydney has two players (Willie Mason and Anthony Tupou) involved in the Centenary Test however they have enough depth to cover their potential absence. Canberra will try hard as they usually do but I’m going to tip the Roosters to win.
North Queensland Cowboys v Cronulla Sharks (betting suspended)
Both teams are last start losers and will be looking to regain some form. The Cowboys have been decimated with injuries to the likes of Matt Bowen and Luke O’Donnell and their fringe players will have to stand up and be counted if they want to win. An injury cloud also hangs over Johnathan Thurston, with betting suspended pending the test halfback’s availability for both the test match and this game. Cronulla have Greg Bird and Paul Gallen backing up from the test and, although they’ll be fatigued, I still think the Sharks have too much oomph in the forwards. Sharks to grab the two points.
Canterbury Bulldogs ($1.65) v Penrith Panthers ($2.20)
The final Saturday fixture sees the Bulldogs take on the Panthers. It’s another tough game to pick and once again I think it will come down to the clash in the forwards. In my opinion, the ‘Dogs have a slight advantage due to the strength of SB Williams, Andrew Ryan and Reni Maitua in the backrow. The Bulldogs should win.
Brisbane Broncos ($1.50) v Manly Sea Eagles ($2.50)
Brisbane has been on fire so far this season but will face tough opposition from Manly. Both teams are placed within the top four and it should be a very tight encounter. However, the Broncos usually reserve their best footy for a Sunday afternoon at Suncorp and I think the likes of Michael Ennis and PJ Marsh will run the Sea Eagles forwards ragged up the middle of the park. Broncos to win.
Parramatta Eels ($1.55) v St. George Illawarra Dragons ($2.35)
After a dreadful start to the year, both teams seem to be improving and finally playing to their potential. Being a Sunday afternoon match, the track will be nice and dry and I think there will be quite a few tries scored. I’m not really sure who will win but I’m going to tip the Eels.
Melbourne Storm ($1.28) v Newcastle Knights ($3.50)
Despite the fact that the Knights are rank outsiders, I think they’re in with a chance of upsetting the Storm. Newcastle has been a team on the up so far this year and they would have taken plenty of confidence out of their 1 point victory over the Titans. The Storm will more than likely have eight players (Cooper Cronk is tipped to replace the injured Thurston) backing up from Friday night and will feel the pinch physically. Even though it’s in Melbourne I’m going to chance my arm and tip the Knights.
The Rabbitohs, Tigers, Titans and Warriors all have the bye.
Last week I picked 4/5 (80%) with the Rabbitohs' first victory in 2008 preventing me from claiming a perfect round. My overall tally for the season equals 34/59 (58%).
