NRL Live Predictions - Round 8

Category: Weekly Tips
Newcastle Knights ($1.80) v Gold Coast Titans ($2.00)
City / Country Representatives
Knights: Danny Buderus (Country), Ben Cross (Country)
Titans: Anthony Laffranchi (Country), Brett Delany (City), Mark Minichiello (City)
Both teams have a number of influential players taking part in the clash on Friday night. Key Titans’ forwards Laffranchi and Minichiello will be backing up and they will feel the pinch against a Knights’ pack that will be fresh after the bye. However, the Knights have their own problems, with inspirational captain Danny Buderus unlikely to play after the City/Country game. A difficult one to pick but the Titans are probably due for a loss and the Knights should get them at home.
Penrith Panthers ($1.90) v Parramatta Eels ($1.90)
Panthers: Luke Rooney (City), Luke Lewis (City)
Eels: Brett Finch (Country), Nathan Hindmarsh (Country), Chad Robinson (City), Feleti Mateo (City)
As the betting odds suggest, this is a very difficult match to tip. The Panthers would have gained great confidence from their golden point victory over the Sharks, while the Eels will be looking to kick start their season. I’m going to back the Eels here. They’ll be desperate and have to win sooner or later.
Wests Tigers ($2.35) v Brisbane Broncos ($1.55)
Tigers: Chris Heighington (Country), Brett Hodgson (City), Bryce Gibbs (City)
Broncos: Peter Wallace (City)
The third Saturday fixture sees the Tigers take on the Broncos. According to my late mail, Brisbane will welcome back the duo of Karmichael Hunt and PJ Marsh but will unfortunately be without the services of strike centre Justin Hodges. It should be a tight encounter and the Wests Tigers are great value at $2.35. However, as a Broncos’ fan, I can’t see anything other that a victory to the boys from Brisbane.
New Zealand Warriors ($1.45) v Canberra Raiders ($2.65)
Warriors: Nil
Raiders: Joel Monaghan (Country), Todd Carney (Country)
I think it’s fair to say that the Warriors are the Hyde and Jekyll side of the NRL. They’re a fearsome force in the land of the long white cloud but are softer than marshmallow away from home. Two of Canberra’s best players (Carney and Monaghan) will have to make the trek over the Tasman following City/Country on Friday night and they’ll be fatigued. I’m going to back the Warriors on the back of their imposing home ground advantage.
South Sydney Rabbitohs ($2.80) v North Queensland Cowboys ($1.40)
Rabbitohs: John Sutton (City)
Cowboys: Ben Harris (Country), Ray Cashmere (City)
The Rabbitohs have been in all sorts of trouble on and off the field this year and should pose no threat whatsoever to the highflying Cowboys, who went very close to beating the Storm last round. Believe it or not, this game will be telecast on Channel Nine and one has to ask the question – why have the Rabbitohs been on FTA so many times in 2008? This game could be ugly. Cowboys to win.
The Bulldogs, Dragons, Roosters, Sea Eagles, Sharks, and Storm all have the bye this round.
Apologies for the lack of activity on this site. I’ve been very busy lately but there should be plenty to read over the coming weeks including State of Origin team predictions.
Last week I picked 4/6 (67%). My overall tally for the season equals 30/54 (56%).
Happy tipping this week!
