Gold Coast Titans ($2.00) v Brisbane Broncos ($1.80)
This is shaping to be the match of the week. The Titans would have gained a mountain of confidence following their away win over the Eels, while the Broncos were patchy against the Knights but still secured victory. Coincidentally, both teams are missing their regular five-eighths, with Mat Rogers copping a 4 week suspension and Darren Lockyer remaining on the sideline with injury. From a Broncos’ fan’s perspective I’m worried about the Titans’ little men tearing us to pieces up the middle of the field. However, in saying that, I think our forwards will be too physical for a smaller Titans’ pack. Broncos to win in a thriller.
Parramatta Eels ($1.65) v Manly Sea Eagles ($2.20)
The Eels have lost troubled halfback Tim Smith but I think it will turn out to be a positive for the side. The new halves combination of Feleti Mateo and Brett Finch had some success earlier in the season and I think they’ll be equally successful this game. Manly put in a big effort against the Storm last weekend and they may be still feeling the pinch. Eels to grab the two points.
Canterbury Bulldogs ($1.55) v St. George Illawarra Dragons ($2.35)
This next match contains two teams desperate for a win. The Bulldogs were last start losers to the Warriors across the Tasman, while the Dragons narrowly went down to the Cowboys. St. George coach Nathan Brown has made a number of changes to his side but I don’t think it’ll be enough to overcome the Bulldogs.
Cronulla Sharks ($1.45) v Penrith Panthers ($2.65)
The Sharks are playing their first home match of 2008 at the newly developed Toyota Park and I can see them playing with plenty of enthusiasm. Cronulla are also one of the better defensive teams and they should be able to hold out the Panthers’ attack. I’m going to back Cronulla here.
North Queensland Cowboys ($1.50) v New Zealand Warriors ($2.50)
After a disastrous start to the year, the Cowboys have recovered with 2 wins in two matches. The Warriors have proven that they’re a daunting prospect at home but they will struggle in tropics of Northern Queensland. Cowboys to win.
Sydney Roosters ($1.36) v Newcastle Knights ($3.00)
The Roosters welcome big Willie Mason back into their starting side and their forward pack should have too much grunt for the Knights. Newcastle has also been forced to shift fullback Kurt Gidley to halfback and I can’t see them scoring enough points against a Roosters outfit firming as a real title contender.
Wests Tigers ($1.60) v South Sydney Rabbitohs ($2.25)
Sunday afternoon footy sees the Tigers take on the Bunnies at the Sydney Cricket Ground. To put it simply I don’t think Souths will win and Wests could rack up quite a score if the track stays nice and dry.
Canberra Raiders ($3.50) v Melbourne Storm ($1.28)
It’s almost impossible to tip against the Storm and I think they’ll win here. However, matches between Melbourne and Canberra are often closer than many people predict and the boys from the national capital will no doubt be a challenge for the reigning premiers.
Last week I tipped a respectable 6/8, taking my season tally to 22/40 (55%).
