NRL Live Predictions - Round 17

Category: Weekly Tips
Gold Coast Titans v ($3.50) v Manly Sea Eagles ($1.28)
The Titans will go into battle against the competition leading Sea Eagles without captain Scott Prince, who has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with a broken arm. In further bad news for the under strength Gold Coast, Ashley Harrison will also miss the game due to a rib injury. The Titans simply have too many quality players sidelined and, even though they have the home ground advantage, I can’t see them keeping pace with the competition leading Manly for the full 80 minutes. Sea Eagles to win but the Titans will start well.
Newcastle Knights ($1.80) v St. George Illawarra Dragons ($2.00)
In further injury news it appears that Knights’ prop Ben Cross will be out for a month, while captain Danny Buderus is in some doubt for this game. The Dragons have some concerns of their own with centre Matt Cooper succumbing to a knee injury. However, more importantly, Wendell Sailor will return to first grade after suffering a fractured cheek bone in his comeback a few weeks ago. This match will be tight but I think the Dragons good form will continue and they should be able to tough out a win.
Melbourne Storm ($1.09) v Canberra Raiders ($6.50)
Well, as the odds suggest, the Storm should win this clash fairly comfortably. Melbourne are travelling nicely at fourth on the ladder, while the Raiders sit in eleventh spot after a disappointing loss at home to the Sharks last round. With this game being played on a Sunday afternoon I can see Melbourne spreading the ball wide to the likes of Greg Inglis, Billy Slater and Israel Folau at every opportunity. The Storm will have too much speed and flair for the Raiders and should win by a large margin.
Parramatta Eels ($1.36) v Penrith Panthers ($3.00)
Even though the Eels were able to beat the depleted Storm last weekend, they looked very ordinary in attack and will have to improve if the want to be any chance against the Panthers. However, in saying that, Penrith also struggled in their last game and they’ll also have to step up a notch. I think we’ll see a very open footy match which will suit the style of Parramatta. Eels to win.
Canterbury Bulldogs ($2.25) v South Sydney Rabbitohs ($1.62)
Souths have been in good form over the past few weeks and head into this clash full of confidence after their remarkable comeback against the Cowboys. The Bulldogs have now slipped down to fifteenth on the table and, apart from the odd moment of brilliance from Sonny Bill Williams, look very uninspiring. The Rabbitohs’ playmakers (Issac Luke, Craig Wing and Chris Sandow) will look to weave their way through the middle of the often flimsy Bulldogs defence. I think the Rabbitohs will grab the two points and continue their run up the ladder.
The Broncos, Cowboys, Roosters, Sharks, Tigers and Warriors all have the bye this weekend.
I picked an average 4/8 last weekend (50%). My overall tally for the season stands at 66/115 (57%).
