Brisbane Broncos v ($1.55) v Wests Tigers ($2.35)
The Broncos were thrashed by the Raiders last weekend and will be looking to bounce back with a win to cement their position in the top eight. Brisbane are still without Darren Lockyer, Peter Wallace and Justin Hodges but welcome back Michael Ennis and PJ Marsh from injury. The dynamic dummy halves will provide some much needed spark in attack. The Tigers have injury problems of their own and their depleted forward pack may struggle against Brisbane’s big boppers. The Broncos will be determined to win this one, and I think they will.
St. George Illawarra Dragons ($1.33) v Penrith Panthers ($3.15)
After an inconsistent start to 2008, the Dragons have slipped under the radar somewhat and now sit at sixth on the ladder. The Panthers, who have recorded the same number of wins as the Dragons this season, are placed at tenth underlying the close nature of the competition. I think St. George will have too much firepower for the Panthers who will miss experienced hooker Luke Priddis. Dragons to win.
Canterbury Bulldogs ($1.65) v Canberra Raiders ($2.20)
The Raiders were fantastic in their defeat of the Broncos, however, it remains to be seen whether they can reproduce the same form away from home. The Bulldogs have been average this season but do start as favourites with the bookmakers. This game won’t be pretty to watch but the Bulldogs should be able to grind out a victory.
Melbourne Storm ($1.05) v North Queensland Cowboys ($8.05)
Is anyone expecting a contest in this one? The second placed Storm are near unbeatable at home, while the Cowboys are an utter shambles at the moment. The Storm will have too much speed across the park and, if North Queensland’s defensive woes continue, this could be a cricket score. Storm by plenty.
New Zealand Warriors ($2.25) v Manly Sea Eagles ($1.60)
Manly are heavy favourites in this encounter but the Warriors always play their best footy at home and this will probably be closer than many expect. The Warriors have axed halfback Grant Rovelli in an attempt to improve their often misfiring attack and it may take a while for the team to adjust to slightly new combinations. Sea Eagles to win on the back of their forward pack.
Newcastle Knights ($2.35) v Sydney Roosters ($1.55)
The Roosters are probably the form team at the moment and I can see them beating the Knights here. The clash of the forwards will be especially intriguing with the likes of O’Meley, Mason, Tupou, Fitzgibbon and Myles coming up against a Knights pack containing Simpson, Buderus, Taia, Paterson and Cross. Overall, the Roosters look the better outfit and they should secure the two points.
Cronulla Sharks ($1.97) v Parramatta Eels ($1.83)
This should be the match of the round. The Eels bounced back into form with a stunning demolition of the Tigers last weekend, while the Sharks overcame the Warriors in a very scrappy contest. I think Cronulla have the edge in the forwards with Parramatta holding an advantage in the backs. However, the big difference between the two teams is Eels five-eighth Feleti Mateo who has been simply outstanding over the past few weeks. Overall, I think the Eels should win in a tight but high scoring affair.
South Sydney Rabbitohs v Gold Coast Titans (betting suspended pending the availability of Scott Prince)
The final match of the round is between the Rabbitohs and the Titans at ANZ Stadium. The Bunnies remain in last position but will have gained great confidence from their upset win over the Warriors. On the other hand, the Titans are flying high and are equal competition leaders. The Titans are traditionally poor away from home but should have enough to win on the back of the kicking game of the mercurial Scott Prince.
I picked a dreadful 1/5 last weekend (20%) and my overall tally for the season stands at 57/99 (58%).
Happy tipping this week!
