NRL Live Predictions - Round 10
State of Origin selection means that many sides will take the field in round 10 of the Telstra Premiership without their star players.
Parramatta Eels ($1.50) v Sydney Roosters ($2.50)
State of Origin Representatives:
Eels: Jarryd Hayne (NSW)
Roosters: Willie Mason (NSW), Anthony Tupou (NSW), Craig Fitzgibbon (NSW), Nate Myles (QLD)
The Eels have been largely unaffected by State of Origin, while the Roosters have a number of key forwards missing. As a result, the Roosters will struggle for metres up the middle of the field against a full strength Parramatta pack. Eels to win fairly comfortably.
Gold Coast Titans ($1.45) v Canterbury Bulldogs ($2.65)
Titans: Anthony Laffranchi (NSW)
Bulldogs: None
The other Friday night fixture sees the Titans take on the Bulldogs at Robina. Laffranchi is a big loss for the Titans but they do welcome back the services of prop Luke Bailey. Halfback Scott Prince will be looking for a big game to show the Queensland selectors exactly what they’re missing out on. The Bulldogs have been out of sorts lately and I’m tipping the Titans to win in a high scoring affair.
Cronulla Sharks ($1.50) v Brisbane Broncos ($2.50)
Sharks: Greg Bird (NSW), Paul Gallen (NSW)
Broncos: Peter Wallace (NSW), Justin Hodges (QLD), Karmichael Hunt (QLD), Sam Thaiday (QLD), PJ Marsh (QLD), Ben Hannant (QLD)
Both teams look are missing crucial players. The Broncos halves pairing of David Stagg and Shane Perry doesn’t exactly inspire a great deal of confidence and the boys from Brisbane will struggle for points. On the other hand, the kicking and passing game of playmaker Brett Kimmorley will ensure that Cronulla play an up-tempo match. The Sharks will have too much in attack for the Broncos and should come away with the two points.
St. George Illawarra Dragons ($1.52) v Melbourne Storm ($2.45)
Dragons: Mark Gasnier (NSW), Matt Cooper (NSW), Ben Hornby (NSW)
Storm: Anthony Quinn (NSW), Brett White (NSW), Ryan Hoffman (NSW), Billy Slater (QLD), Greg Inglis (QLD), Israel Folau (QLD), Cameron Smith (QLD), Michael Crocker (QLD), Dallas Johnson (QLD)
Melbourne has the largest Origin contingent of any side, with nine players taking part on Wednesday evening. However, the Dragons are missing three very influential team members of their own and, considering that they’re running third last on the table, it won’t be an easy match for them. The Storm are also likely to play a very forward orientated game and the Dragons big men will have to step up. Overall, the Dragons should win, but it will be closer than many expect.
Manly Sea Eagles ($1.22) v North Queensland Cowboys ($4.00)
Sea Eagles: Brett Stewart (NSW)
Cowboys: Johnathan Thurston (QLD), Carl Webb (QLD), Jacob Lillyman (QLD)
Manly showed impressive form against the Broncos last round and they’ll be wanting to continue in a similar vain against the Cowboys. I really hope that the Cowboys’ fringe players stand up but, considering that they have been struggling even with the likes of Thurston and Webb, it could get ugly. The Sea Eagles to win convincingly.
Penrith Panthers ($1.70) v New Zealand Warriors ($2.10)
Panthers: Petero Civoniceva (QLD)
Warriors: Brent Tate (QLD)
As the betting odds suggest, this is shaping to be a tight encounter. The Panthers trounced the Bulldogs last weekend but will miss the presence of captain Civoniceva against a Warriors team looking to record their first away win of the season. Being a day match I can see the Warriors throwing the ball around in attack and scoring enough tries to beat the Panthers.
Newcastle Knights ($2.35) v Wests Tigers ($1.55)
Knights: Danny Buderus (NSW), Ben Cross (NSW)
Tigers: None
The Knights will be without their two Origin representatives and the injured Kurt Gidley who would have definitely been selected for NSW if not for a cruelly timed injury. With the return of Robbie Farah and Benji Marshall, I think Wests should have too much pace and speed for the Knights. Tigers to win.
Canberra Raiders ($1.55) v South Sydney Rabbitohs ($2.35)
Raiders: None
Rabbitohs: None
Well who knows who to tip in this one? The Bunnies notched their maiden victory of 2008 last game and will be confident about their chances against the Raiders in Canberra. Souths to win in a dour match.
Last week I picked 3/6 (50%). My overall tally for the season stands at 37/65 (57%).
Happy tipping this week and please feel free to comment!
