2009 NRL Draw Announced

The draw for the 2009 National Rugby League has been today been made public by CEO David Gallop.
Usually not revealed until after the season, the release of the draw during the finals series give fans something to look forward to if their team missed out on a Grand Final berth.
“Grand Final week is a time to celebrate the achievements of the two best teams in the competition but it is also an opportunity to give hope for all fans that their teams can be part of the festivities next season,” Gallop said speaking to nrl.com.
“There is something for all fans to look forward to in every round of the 2009 Telstra Premiership, as well as an exciting representative program that includes a Harvey Norman State of Origin match in Melbourne.”
Interesting components of the draw include:
- The fact that the ANZAC Test and annual City v Country fixture have been both been scheduled for May 8. It remains to be seen how this will effect television coverage and whether fans will be able to see both games live. In my opinion, I think it should be played as a television double header, with the City/Country kicking off at 6:30pm followed by the test match at 8:30pm.
- The heritage round is now a permanent fixture in the season with traditional matchups taking part in round 10.
- The majority of byes now occur before State of Origin fixtures to ensure teams have their full compliment of stars available.
- The State of Origin series will be split between Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.
- The 'local' derby between the Broncos and Cowboys will return to round one. As a Broncos supporter, it's a personal favourite of mine - there's no better way to kick off a season!
