Manly topple Titans

The Manly Sea Eagles have consolidated their position at the top of the table with a comprehensive 34-14 victory over the Gold Coast Titans at Skilled Stadium on Friday night.

Despite the final scoreline, and the fact they were without Scott Prince, Luke Bailey and Ashley Harrison, the Titans produced a gallant performance and actually lead 14-12 with less than 25 minutes to go on the clock.

However, a late flurry of tries - including one of the tries the season to fullback Brett Stewart on fulltime - saw the Sea Eagles run away with the win.

For the Gold Coast hooker Nathan Friend was tireless in defence, while Manly forwards Josh Perry and Glenn Stewart were physical up front.

Gold Coast TItans - 14
Tries: Anthony Laffranchi 2
Goals: Mat Rogers 2/3

Manly Sea Eagles - 34
Tries: Brett Stewart 2, Steven Bell, Steve Menzies, Jamie Lyon, David Williams
Goals: Matt Orford 5/6

Dragons continue streak against Knights

The St. George Illawarra Dragons have registered their seventh consecutive victory thanks to a 24-16 win over the Newcastle Knights at Energy Australia Stadium.

The Dragons dominated possession and field position during the opening half and racked up two tries to Chase Stanley and Brett Morris to lead 14-0 at the interval.

St. George Illawarra halfback Jamie Soward posted the first points of the second stanza with a try in the 45th minute, before front rower Jason Ryles barged over from close range to give his team an 24-0 lead.

However, the Knights began a comeback of sorts thanks to the efforts of explosive centre Junior Sau who crossed for a double. Kurt Gidley managed a consolation try on the stroke of fulltime but it was all in vain, as the Dragons ran out convincing winners in the end.

After playing Origin on Wednesday night, Gidley was courageous in defeat. For the Dragons, props Jason Ryles and Justin Poore provided the go-forward that set up the victory, while the Morris twins looked dangerous with the ball in hand.

Newcastle Knights - 16
Tries: Junior Sau 2, Kurt Gidley
Goals: Kurt Gidley 2/3

St George Illawarra Dragons - 24
Tries: Chase Stanley, Josh Morris, Jamie Soward, Jason Ryles
Goals: Jamie Soward 4/5

NRL Live Predictions - Round 17

Gold Coast Titans v ($3.50) v Manly Sea Eagles ($1.28)

The Titans will go into battle against the competition leading Sea Eagles without captain Scott Prince, who has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with a broken arm. In further bad news for the under strength Gold Coast, Ashley Harrison will also miss the game due to a rib injury. The Titans simply have too many quality players sidelined and, even though they have the home ground advantage, I can’t see them keeping pace with the competition leading Manly for the full 80 minutes. Sea Eagles to win but the Titans will start well.

Newcastle Knights ($1.80) v St. George Illawarra Dragons ($2.00)

In further injury news it appears that Knights’ prop Ben Cross will be out for a month, while captain Danny Buderus is in some doubt for this game. The Dragons have some concerns of their own with centre Matt Cooper succumbing to a knee injury. However, more importantly, Wendell Sailor will return to first grade after suffering a fractured cheek bone in his comeback a few weeks ago. This match will be tight but I think the Dragons good form will continue and they should be able to tough out a win.

Melbourne Storm ($1.09) v Canberra Raiders ($6.50)

Well, as the odds suggest, the Storm should win this clash fairly comfortably. Melbourne are travelling nicely at fourth on the ladder, while the Raiders sit in eleventh spot after a disappointing loss at home to the Sharks last round. With this game being played on a Sunday afternoon I can see Melbourne spreading the ball wide to the likes of Greg Inglis, Billy Slater and Israel Folau at every opportunity. The Storm will have too much speed and flair for the Raiders and should win by a large margin.

Parramatta Eels ($1.36) v Penrith Panthers ($3.00)

Even though the Eels were able to beat the depleted Storm last weekend, they looked very ordinary in attack and will have to improve if the want to be any chance against the Panthers. However, in saying that, Penrith also struggled in their last game and they’ll also have to step up a notch. I think we’ll see a very open footy match which will suit the style of Parramatta. Eels to win.

Canterbury Bulldogs ($2.25) v South Sydney Rabbitohs ($1.62)

Souths have been in good form over the past few weeks and head into this clash full of confidence after their remarkable comeback against the Cowboys. The Bulldogs have now slipped down to fifteenth on the table and, apart from the odd moment of brilliance from Sonny Bill Williams, look very uninspiring. The Rabbitohs’ playmakers (Issac Luke, Craig Wing and Chris Sandow) will look to weave their way through the middle of the often flimsy Bulldogs defence. I think the Rabbitohs will grab the two points and continue their run up the ladder.

The Broncos, Cowboys, Roosters, Sharks, Tigers and Warriors all have the bye this weekend.

I picked an average 4/8 last weekend (50%). My overall tally for the season stands at 66/115 (57%).

NRL Live Predictions - Round 16

Sydney Roosters v ($2.00) v Canterbury Bulldogs ($1.80)

I think the Bulldogs will bounce back with a win after their loss to the Raiders last week. The Roosters have too many players sidelined to be a chance in this one. Bulldogs in a tight one

NRL Live Predictions - Round 15

Brisbane Broncos v ($1.55) v Wests Tigers ($2.35)

The Broncos were thrashed by the Raiders last weekend and will be looking to bounce back with a win to cement their position in the top eight. Brisbane are still without Darren Lockyer, Peter Wallace and Justin Hodges but welcome back Michael Ennis and PJ Marsh from injury. The dynamic dummy halves will provide some much needed spark in attack. The Tigers have injury problems of their own and their depleted forward pack may struggle against Brisbane’s big boppers. The Broncos will be determined to win this one, and I think they will

NRL Live Predictions - Round 14

Sydney Roosters v ($1.36) v Penrith Panthers ($3.00)

Both teams are last start losers and will be determined to turn things around this weekend. The Roosters were thrashed last round by Manly, while the Panthers were upset by the less fancied Sharks. Sydney has the larger contingent (Mason, Myles, Tupou and Fitzgibbon) backing up from Origin duty – they may feel the pinch physically. However, in saying that, I do like the look of the Roosters’ halves pairing and I think they’ll win in a close one

NRL Live Predictions - Round 13

New Zealand Warriors v ($1.25) v South Sydney Rabbitohs ($3.75)

The Warriors have only lost once at home this season and I can’t see them being beaten by the Rabbitohs in this encounter. Despite the unavailability of Steven Price and Brent Tate, New Zealand have named a strong line-up. On the other hand, Souths have a very inexperienced backline, with Jamie Simpson and Chris Sandow making their NRL debuts. Sandow could now be the smallest player in the NRL and he’ll be tested in defence by the size of the Warriors’ forwards. Warriors to win by plenty
